Finding Your Harmony with The Merrymaker Sisters

Recently we decided that we needed to hear more from those inspiring women that live harmonious lives every single day.

People who inspire us and motivate us to find happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives.

We want to know how they do it and what advice they can offer us.

Today we’ve got two people giving us their wisdom, we had a chat with Emma and Carla Papas: The Merrymaker Sisters.

The Merrymaker sisters are recipe developers and health & fitness bloggers from Canberra. Their site is full of awesome insights into eating better and becoming a much happier, merrier person.

What are some of the ways you make your day-to-day life more harmonious?

We start our day with some sort of ritual which usually includes a short meditation, yoga or pilates session and delicious coffee. We try (and we mean TRY) to stay off our phones until our ‘work day’ begins. During our day we listen to music while we work and always make sure we’re having fun while we work! We’ll break up the day with a delicious beach walk or time in the sun.

How do you stay creative and inspired about the things you do every day?

We make sure we mix things up all the time so we’re not doing the same thing every day. We’ll write, we’ll create recipes, we’ll podcast, we’ll take photos and we’ll follow the fun. The stuff that brings more joy to our lives is the stuff that stays at the top of our list. If we find we’re no longer enjoying something, then we’ll find a way to either stop doing it or find a way to do it with more joy.

What was your biggest learning/growth experience in the past year?

It would definitely have to be with relationships and human behaviour in general. Relationships both personally and in our business. Something that is so important is communication and vulnerability. Being open about our feelings as well as what we’re going through brings us closer together and allows us to help each other. We’ve also learnt that often if someone is going through something, they don’t always want a solution, they often just need someone to listen.

What would be your advice to people who struggle with making healthy and whole food a staple in their life?

It’s about finding your value connector. What is your why to living a healthier life? What are the things that are at the top of your value list? For example, family, socialising, career? Then you need to connect them to your health goals. How will being healthier positively impact those values? Let’s pick family as a value, well living healthier will give you more energy, therefore you’ll be able to play with your kids for longer and actually enjoy that time, instead of being too tired and wound up after a long day at work.

What’s the easiest thing that people can do right now to improve their cooking and eating habits?

Just start. Start small. Make one teeny change to today that is a healthier choice. Whether it be cutting out gluten, not drinking wine, going for a salad instead of fast food. As you make these small changes, they’ll get easier and easier, then you can work on the next change. You don’t have to do it all at once all you jave to do is take one step.

What are your goals for the future? What have you got planned for this year?

We have big big goals! We’re about to start a new company which is more around the mindfulness movement which is very exciting (more to come on that soon). Plus we have a new cookbook Get Merry (http://www.themerrymakersisters.com/get-merry/) that is already on pre-sale, available in October worldwide, and we’re bringing the first ever MerryCon (http://www.themerrymakersisters.com/merrycon/) to life in February 2017, our healthy, happy event where you’ll get the action steps you’ve been looking for to kick start the new year with a big woohoo!
