Finding Your Harmony with Karen Thomson

Recently we decided that we needed to hear more from those inspiring women that live harmonious lives every single day.

People who inspire us and motivate us to find happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives.

We want to know how they do it and what advice they can offer us.

We recently got talking to Karen Thomson!

Karen has 8 years of experience working at The Harmony Addictions Group in Hout Bay, Cape Town. She founded HELP: Harmony Eating & Lifestyle Program, the first sugar and carb inpatient addiction program using Low Carb High Fat nutritional approach, with Prof Tim Noakes in 2013. Her passion lies in identifying the deep-seated interest in the relationship between people’s self-belief and their addictions and assisting them in empowering themselves in body, mind and spirit.

What are some of the ways you make your day-to-day life more harmonious?

I try not put too much on my plate. I have a tendency to say yes to every opportunity that presents itself which makes me feel overwhelmed really quickly. I now try and space activities to allow me space to breathe. I incorporate exercise and healthy meals into my day and make sure to take at least 15 minutes to myself. The best way to start my day is by meditating yet having two small kids doesn’t always make that possible. I just do the best I can every day and try and be kind and loving to myself. 

How do you stay creative and inspired about the things you do every day?

I dont do it for money. I do it because I truly believe in what I do and it resonates on a deep level. For me to feel creative about something it has to feel authentic, when something doesn’t feel authentic or my intuition warns me about it I say no.

What was your biggest learning/growth experience in the past year?

It’s been a tough year in dealing with the corporate world and learning that not everyone has your best interest at heart. I’ve been very naive in my beliefs and got quite hurt. It made me angry and resentful for a while but I learn the most beautiful lesson: I will not believe in scarcity, there is enough to go around and I will keep supporting others in shining their light even when I may feel a bit threatened by it. I choose love, not fear.

How do you stay focused on the things that are important (love, happiness) and not be distracted by all the drama that goes on around us?

My number one priority is my family, nothing comes before it. My kids couldn’t care less about what I do. They keep me grounded, authentic and real. Love and happiness is their natural way of being and so i am exposed to it every ,minute I spend with them. This is truly the greatest gift.

What’s the biggest thing that people can do right now to create more harmony in their life?

Choose love, always, in every situation.

What are your goals for the future? What have you got planned for this year?

My goals for the future are to trust the universe, stay connected to my spiritual world and live in the moment. Everyone else or any external goals cannot be achieved unless I find peace within.
